There was a sharp divide in my home growing up about the necessity of background noise. There were some in the family who couldn’t get anything done unless the tv or radio was on in the background, even if they weren’t actively listening to it. There were others who had to sequester themselves in a quiet area in order to do their work. Such are the trials of living with other people: compromises abound. Click title for more.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.
One of the best kept secrets of the Catholic Church is the fact that Ash Wednesday is not actually a Holy Day of Obligation. In spite of this fact, there are many who are more diligent about making it to Mass on this day than on Sundays or other Holy Days, and it probably has something to do with the fact that with the imposition of ashes we get something tangible to take on our way out into the world. In the midst of the whirlwind of unpacking, settling in, and alphabetizing my books (which is one of my favorite pastimes, by the way), I just wanted to put a quick note on the website thanking everyone for their incredibly enthusiastic support and welcome over this past week. It seems like it will be weeks or months before I am fully caught up and aware of all the goings-on in the region, but in the meantime I have very much enjoyed getting to meet people and start the process of putting faces to names.
